However, it is only towards the <strong>end of the 19th century<\/strong> that it was recognized scientifically as a\u00a0<strong>well-defined disease<\/strong> &#8211; and that\u00a0its origin and treatment\u00a0began to be investigated.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-46 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alamaya.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/bleuler.jpg\" alt=\"bleuler\" width=\"150\" height=\"202\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u00a0owes its name to the Swiss\u00a0<strong>Eugen Bleuler<\/strong>, professor\u00a0of psychiatry\u00a0in Zurich\u00a0from 1898\u00a0to 1927. In 1911,\u00a0in <em>Dementia Praecox or the Group of Schizophrenias<\/em>, he refutes the\u00a0designation &#8220;early dementia&#8221; introduced by Emil Kraepelin (German psychiatrist\u00a0considered as the founder of modern scientific psychiatry), and replaces it by the term &#8220;schizophrenia&#8221; to illustrate the idea of a fragmented mind.<\/p>\n<p>In his book, Eugen Bleuler explains:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I call dementia praecox schizophrenia because, as I hope to demonstrate, the splitting of the different psychic functions is one of its most important characteristics.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The name dementia praecox or schizophrenia designates a group of psychoses\u00a0which develops\u00a0at times\u00a0in a chronic mode,\u00a0at times by surges, which can\u00a0stop or retrocede at any stage, but which probalbly doesn&#8217;t allow a complete\u00a0&#8220;restitutio ad integrum&#8221;.
