He studied <strong>medicine<\/strong> at the <strong>University of Lausanne<\/strong> (CH) and achieved his M.D. in 1957. He pursued his training at the Institute of Physiology in Lausanne (1958-1960), at the psychiatric clinic of Bel-Air in <strong>Geneva <\/strong>(1960-1961), at the National Institute of Health in <strong>Bethesda\/USA<\/strong>(1961-1963), and at Columbia University in <strong>New York\/USA<\/strong> (1963-1965).<\/p>\n<p>He started his activities at the <strong>Brain Research Institute<\/strong> of the <strong>University of Zurich<\/strong> in 1965, where he was\u00a0appointed <strong>senior lecturer<\/strong> in 1971 and subsequently\u00a0<strong>full professor<\/strong>. He was appointed <strong>head <\/strong>of the Institute in 1984 and held this position until 1998. Since\u00a01998, he has been<strong> invited professor <\/strong>at the <strong>University of Lausanne<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>His career was punctuated with <strong>numerous distinctions<\/strong> for the excellence of this work: the\u00a0C\u00e9sar Roux Prize\u00a0(1961),\u00a0the\u00a0Robert Bing Prize\u00a0(1973),\u00a0the Marcel Benoist Prize\u00a0(1980) \u2013 which is the <strong>highest scientific distinction awarded by the Swiss government<\/strong>. He was named doctor honoris causa of the University of Geneva in 1994, and <em>Einzelmitglied <\/em>of the\u00a0Swiss Academy of\u00a0Medical Sciences in 1996.\u00a0 He received the Medal of\u00a0Human Frontier\u00a0Science Program in 1999, and became a\u00a0honorary member of the Swiss\u00a0Society for Neuroscience in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>He is author of <strong>over 400 publications<\/strong> focusing in particular on chemical exchanges and signal transmission in the nervous system as well as on the neurobiology of schizophrenia.<\/p>\n<p>He was <strong>president <\/strong>of the\u00a0<strong>European Neuroscience Association<\/strong> (1986-1988), and founded the\u00a0<strong>European Journal of Neuroscience<\/strong> in 1988, of which he was <strong>editor in chief<\/strong> between 1993 and 1997. In parallel, from 1993 to 2000, he held the position of <strong>secretary general<\/strong> of the <strong>Human Frontier Science Program<\/strong>, created by the G8 member States.<br \/>\nFurthermore, during his whole career, he was actively involved in a great number of scientific committees and societies in Switzerland, Europe and on the international level.
