To this day,\u00a0no treatment allows to improve\u00a0all of the\u00a0disabling symptoms related\u00a0to the disease. However,<strong> research<\/strong>\u00a0has achieved <strong>considerable progress<\/strong>,\u00a0leading to\u00a0new therapeutic perspectives and, in the longer term, possible measures to prevent schizophrenia.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the <strong>important and recognized prevalence<\/strong> of schizophrenia and other psychiatric diseases, the <strong>financing<\/strong> of research in this field remains a <strong>major challenge<\/strong> and falls <strong>a long way behind<\/strong> the means invested for the benefit of somatic medicine. <strong>Ignorance<\/strong> of the massive scale of schizophrenia as well as the <strong>clich\u00e9s<\/strong>, <strong>taboos<\/strong> and <strong>fear<\/strong> still linked to psychiatric diseases hinder public awareness needed to advance research, and represent additional obstacles to scientific and therapeutic progress.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the Alamaya Foundation, which was set up in 2002, is to collect <strong>private funds for the benefit of research in schizophrenia<\/strong>. <strong>The Foundation is a registered not-for-profit organization; donations are tax-deductible.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alamaya.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Research-vs-Costs_E-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2831 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alamaya.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Research-vs-Costs_E-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"408\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alamaya.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Research-vs-Costs_E-2.png 1270w, https:\/\/www.alamaya.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Research-vs-Costs_E-2-300x250.png 300w, https:\/\/www.alamaya.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Research-vs-Costs_E-2-1030x860.png 1030w, https:\/\/www.alamaya.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Research-vs-Costs_E-2-768x641.png 768w, https:\/\/www.alamaya.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Research-vs-Costs_E-2-705x588.png 705w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" \/><\/a>The graph opposite illustrates the striking <strong>imbalance<\/strong> between investments granted for diseases affecting the brain (among which psychiatric disorders) and the costs they occasion for society (treatments, hospitalizations, rehabilitation, disablement allowances, etc.) in comparison with a disease such as cancer. The figures published by the <em>European Brain Council<\/em> show that <strong>investments in research targeting brain diseases correspond to 27% whereas their costs amount to 71%<\/strong>.
